British Columbia is home to incredible but threatened ‘ancient’ or old-growth forests. Despite the environmental and economic benefits, old-growth forests are increasingly scarce. For example, on Vancouver Island 75% of the original productive old-growth forests have already been logged, including 90% of the valley bottoms where the richest biodiversity and biggest trees are found.

We cannot afford to lose this ecological treasure - please take a moment to write a letter in support of protecting BC’s ancient forests and ensuring sustainable forestry jobs!

Do letters count?

YES! Every letter represents hundreds more who feel the same way. Because politicians are dependent on public support, the number of people who write indicates the risks of their policies to their abilities to gain power or stay in power from the electorate.

In your letter, let the BC Liberal government know that:

  • Old-growth forests are important because they:
    • support unique wildlife,
    • provide clean water for salmon, wildlife, and people
    • store vast amounts of atmospheric carbon
    • support the tourism industry
    • are central to many First Nations cultures

  • Forestry jobs are declining largely due to:
    • resource depletion from unsustainable forestry practices
    • a failure to retool old-growth saw mills to process smaller second-growth logs and to develop value-added wood industries
    • the export of raw logs to foreign mills (resulting in a loss of potential forestry jobs in BC)

Ask that the government:

  • Undertake a Provincial Old-Growth Strategy to inventory old-growth in the province and to protect old-growth forest where it’s scarce (egs. Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, Southern Interior)
  • Ensure the sustainable logging of second-growth forests
  • End the export of raw logs in order to ensure a guaranteed log supply for BC mills
  • Assist in the re-tooling of BC mills and the development of value-added wood processing facilities
